CAPTAIN OF S.A.

McGlew Named For Series (N .Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) DURBAN, December 13 D. J. McGlew will captain South Africa for the remainder of the unofficial test series against the touring New Zealand cricket team, Mr J. Cheetham, the South African selector, announced yesterday. “It was a wonderful tert,” said McGlew in an interview at the end of the first test yesterday. McGlew said he would like to pay tribute to New Zealand for their great effort. “But at the same time I would like to say how magnificently our side fielded. I feel that the selectors’ confidence in experience plus youth has already paid dividends and will continue to do so in the future,” he said. ; Mr J. G. Leggat. the man--1 ager of the New Zealand i team, said: “Congratulations to South Africa, who deserved their win for fighting back so well after their collapse yesterday.” He said that his team was disappointed not to win, but he said: “We have no complaints. At times our batting was careless and South Africa’s catching proved the decisive factor. “I am very pleased with our bowling and fielding. It is a pity the match was marred for players and spectators alike by the number of noballs called. “I think we can face the second test with considerable confidence after such a performance which had many great moments. “Our captain’s unfitness, was a severe blow but we must not lose sight of the fact that South Africa were without Neil Adcock. Had John been fit in either innings I think the game might well have ended differently ” Mr Cheetham said: “It is a pity any one side had to lose.” J. Reid, the New Zealand captain, was not available for comment. Suffering from a bad cold, he left the ground immediately after the match and returned to his hotel, where he went straight to bed.
