Registration System (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec, 12 On January 1 the births and deaths of Maoris will be recorded for the first time on the same register as those of Europeans. There has been only one register for marriages since 1952. At present there are 236 registrars of births and deaths of Maoris. They include teachers, postmasters, officers of the Justice Department, a policeman. a missionary, a church secretary and a public accountant. ■ When the new system comes into operation all but about 30 or 40 of the registers in isolated areas will be withdrawn and new registers will be issued. They will have the power to register any birth or death, irrespective of race. The new registration form will provide for the recording of the degree of Maori blood, if any, and the name of the tribe to which the person belongs.
