Poultry-Keeping
Sir, in an item on your women’s page. Miss McLean is reported as saying: “We want homes, space for growing food and keeping fowls.” Another item draws attention to “Danger to food from warm weather.” I know nothing worse than fowlhouses for breeding flies. Some Weeks ago “The Press” reported: “Strict conditions for backyard poultry-keepers in the Thames borough have been set. Roosters are prohibited, the number of hens limited, and construction, siting, and maintenance of houses are subject to control. No‘ more than 12 birds to a property of less than half an acre, and an annual fee of 10s. Poultry houses are not allowed to be built less than 30 feet from a house or buildings, and must be 10 feet from boundaries. Minimum floor space. 40 square feet,” I beg the Christchurch City Council to be equally health minded.— YOufs, etc.. HOPEFUL. November 20, 1961.
[The Town Clerk of Christchurch (Mr C. S. Bowie) said: “The city by-laws and town planning ordinances make provision for the control of poultry in the city. Specific complaints involving the keeping of poultry are always investigated, and prompt steps are taken to deal with any unsatisfactory conditions found.”]
