ATHLETICS Senior Javelin, Pole Vault Records Broken

Two senior field events, which have been under consistent pressure for the last season or two, were broken by two of the province’s foremost athletes at the inter-club athletic meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday. R. Ball was in impressive form in the senior javelin and his winning distance of 210 ft l|in was five and a half inches better than his own record.

In the pole vault, C. Stricke established a new record height ot 12ft Min, which wm half an inch better than his previous beat effort It was Stricke's first appearance at the park this season and it was indeed an impressive performance. He tailed st his first attempt at the record height, but at the second he scraped Over the bar which bounced slightly on the uprights. In tills event D. C. Leary sprained his ankle when he landed on hard ground beyond the small pit. Leary is a member at the Universities’ Rugby team which will tour California in February, but it is certain that his injury will be better by that time.

Notwithstanding the complete lack ot opposition in the under 15 80 metres hurdles, the promising A. Thompson returned the excellent time of 12sec, which bettered the standard by .Beec. Thompson’s time will now go forward as the provincial record.

Another junior competitor, J. Oakley, in the women’s under-14 100 yards recorded 12.5 sec, which was a record. Oakley’s record was established in a heat, but her time in the final was 12.6 sec, a little slower, but still a very good effort into a fresh breeze. One of the oldest records in the book was almost broken when Miss L. Anderson sped over the women’s senior 80 metre hurdles in ll.fisec, only .Isec slower than the provincial time. Miss Anderson has gone from strength to strength this season and her improvement in sprinting has undoubtedly sharpened her hurdling technique. She raced over the obstacles without any great effort and it may not be long before she establishes new figures in this event.

There was an interesting clash in the senior men's quarter-mile when D. Mackenzie, who has generally won the sprint events this season, and G. Hack, the provincial quarter and halfmile record holder, met. Mackenzie looked better over the early stages and seemed

to be running well within himself, but Hack, who is noted for his powerful finish, gradually pulled ahead over the last stages and won in the good time of SO.toec, with Mackenzie ,Beec behind in second place. D. Warren, who has been promoted from B grade to A grade, ran a particularly fine race and was not far behind Mackenzie at the tape. Junior half-mile R. Milne, who has narely failed to run a good race this season, led from the start in the junior half-mile and although challenged by the determined W. Slinn, he kept ahead to win in Imin 59.1 sec, which is an impressive time for this stage of the year. Slinn's time of 2min for second place was his personal best. With these two providing such keen competition the junior half-miles should produce even lower times -in the weeks ahead.

Miss M. Chamberlain turned the tables on Miss L. Anderson in the women’s A grade 100 yards when she drew away at the 75-yard mark to win in li.Ssec, a yard and a half in front of Miss Anderson. Miss Chamberlain ran a sound race in the 440 yards, too, and recorded 56.35ec for a comfortable win over Miss K. Mackenzie.

Miss V. Sioper did remarkably well in the women's A grade discus when she threw the winning distance of 162 ft Ofin. Miss Sioper was troubled by a muscle injury in the leg, and her effort, because of that, was ail the more impressive.

D. Reece and T. Preece fought out tiie final stages of the gruelling six-mile event, 24 laps of the park. These two and B. Curie led for much of the race, with one or the other taking the lead at various stages. But over the last few laps Reece and Preece drew away, with Reece breasting the tape in 30min 56sec. Because Reece was a late entry he was not able to claim the event and the winner was the second place-getter, Preece, who recorded 3 Imin 2.6 sec. Curie was third in 31min 50.2 sec.
