Incentive To Saving
Sir, —Words fail to express my amazement and contempt at the lack at understanding shown by the compilers of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce newsletter published in your issue this morning. Chambers of Commerce people are regarded as long-headed business men engaged in manufacturing goods for sale, and judging by the spate of advertising lately they are very keen to selL If the public heed the exhortations and threats so freely made, business will stagnate. True, the savings so made will go to the Government to be spent, but what guarantee is there that the Government can do any better at spending the money on productive works? Increased inducements to save by way of higher interest rates will add to the burden of taxation, which is already high enough to be the chief factor in inflation. Tbe Chamber can be likened to the blind leading the blind, but we are not all blind.—Yours, etc., W. B. BRAY. Leeston. November 24, 1961
