Large Crowd Attends Timaru A. And P. Show

An estimated 8000 persons attended the final day of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show on Saturday. Gate takings totalled £B7o—about £3OO more than last year. The champion of the beef breeds was Makura Larry D 12th, a two-year-odd Hereford bull entered by Allandale Station, Ltd. The reserve champion, a yearling Aberdeen Angus bull, was shown by A. J. Darling. The champion ribbon for all dairy cattle was won by N. J. Sherriff and Sons, the winning entry being a four-year-old Friesian cow, Deloraine Domino Jill. The finals of the dog trials, held In the ring, and judged by Mr J. Newfoegin, of Oamani, severely tested man and dog in all cases because of the difficult behaviour of the sheep. R. M. Wilson’s Starlight won the open trial for the Kinnout Challenge Cup, and R. Moffat’s Don was the winner of the maiden trial. Mr J. D. Paterson (Darfield) said entries in the Border Leicester section were good throughout. The champion ewe was outstanding, and shorn ram hoggets were an especially strong class, although some showed too much kemp, which was detrimental to the breed. Old woolly rams displayed the effects of the late season, he said. . He was agreeably surprised at the rise in quality at the Red Polls, raid the judge, Mr C. Mannings, of Christchurch. Harness horses and ponies, exhibited for the first time in two years were real “topliners,” in the opinion of the judge, Mr C. S. Elms, of Dunedin. The champion and reserve champion horses would have held their own in any show ring in New Zealand, and were a credit to their owners. With their high stepping, beautiful harness and gigs they created a lot of interest- The champion pony was especially good, said Mr Elms. Although entries were disappointing, the quality of beef cattle was good, said Mr J. Y. Scales (Christchurch) who judged the beef breeds. The champion was a fine animal, he said. Timaru had some outstanding stud cattle in the beef breeds, and had always competed with success at major shows throughout the country. All classes were well filled in the Romney rams section. Mr G. L Morrison (Gore) said the champion and reserve champion were excellent specimens. The Romney marsh ewes (judged by Mr A. T. Otirey (Heriot) had “good heads, plenty of length in conformation, and excellent fleeces.”

Mr Si W. Galletly (Ealing) described the Hampshire® as “magnificent sheep,” which for a new breed should go a long way In this country. The ■quality of the Corriedales was very good, while the Ryelands came forward in good order.

Mr F. W. Allan (Ruapuna) judged the flock sheep. He was disappointed in the number of entries. The “outstanding” exhibit was the prize-winning . pen of three

crossbred ewe hoggets entered by W. V. Norton. He said be was concerned at the number of types In tbe three shorn ewe hogget class, and he found difficulty in placing some of the different crossbred types, he said. Championship awards were as follows:
