Five Escapers Gaoled

WELLINGTON, Nov. 24. Sentences ranging from three years’ to five years’ gaol were imposed on five young men, who were involved in an escape from the Waikeria youth centre on October 22. by Mr Justice in the Supreme Court at Hamilton today. In the escape two prison officers were assaulted and one was seriously injured. The accused were convicted on 69 charges, including breaking from a penal institution by violence, assault so as to cause actual bodily harm, car conversion, shop and house-breaking and theft. Hula Matekino George Hansen, aged 25. was sentenced to five years’ gaol, George Patrick Nathan, aged 18, and Raymond Ted Te Aonui, aged 18, to 3} years, and Michael Thomas Prior, aged 20, and Tamo Hapimana Renata, aged 24, to three years.
