Control Of Harbour Beaches

Sir. —May I reply to Mr Burk’s comment on my letter of November 13? If, as Mr Burk says the beaches

are regularly inspected by officials of the Harbour Board, then the only possible explanation of the disgraceful state of Charteris ’ Bay beach is that the officials must be blind in one eye and look the otherway with the good eye. Anyone who tries to walk, at low water, along the beach from the parking area northward through a maze of decrepit slipways (many of which are constructed of condemned railway iron so full of rust and splinters as to be dangerous, especially to young children) will see that there is great ground for complaint. I can only assume that any inspections made is at high water or from a boat, when these obstructions are less obvious.—Yours, etc., SPECTATOR. November 23, 1961.
