Sportsman’s Notebook RANKING LISTS FOR JUNIOR TENNIS

Ranking lists for boys and girls have been announced by the Canterbury Junior Lawn Tennis Association. Matches will be played among the players on the lists and from the positions teams for representative junior fixtures will be chosen. The lists are. —

Boys— G. Ford 1, L. Watkins 2, R. McCutcheon' 3, A. Brooks 4, G. Hastie 5. W. Edgecumbe 6, J. Cullington 7. J. Mitchell 8, J. Brebner 9, I. Stanton 10.

Girls.— S. Rich 1, H. Bruce and D. Smith (equal) 2 C. Andrew' 4. S. Mac Neil! 5, L. Ashby 6. L. King 7, D. Hopping 8. F. Thomson and D. Newton (equal) 9. B. Brebner 11. J. Coombs 12, B Fineran 13. J. Bell 14. E. Frizzell 15.

Matches will be arranged between 4 pm. and 6 p.m. on Monday evenings so that players meet those one above them on the lists, and losers later meeting those one below them.

Those who take part in senior ranking matches will be obliged to play in the junior matches as well if they wish to hold their places and so be eligible for teams. The teams for the first matches for the Slazenger and Howe Shields tomorrow were selected last week as follows.—

Boys v. West Coast at Grey, mouth—G. Ford, L. Watkins. R McCutcheon A. Brooks. Reserve. R. G Hastie. Girls v. West Coast at Christchurch.—D. Smith. H. Bruce, C. Andrew. S. MacNeill. Reserve. L. Ashby. S. Rich was not available. These are elimination matches and the zone matches will be held, boys at Oamaru and girls at Timaru on December 2 and 3. If the Canterbury teams beat the West Coast they would meet North Otago oh their first-round zone matches. Any changes in the lists after next Monday's ladder matches could affect the selection of the teams to go south. ¥ * ¥ Professional Tour There is now almost certain to be a tour of New Zealand by Jack Kramer's professional tennis players and the most suitable time is thought to be early in February. The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association has been advised that a tour at this time would probably include L. Ayala, of Chile, plus five of the following. A Trabert. F. Sedgman, B. Mac Kay. E, Buchholz. A. Gimeno, F. Segura. L. Hoad and K Rosewait Kramer also advised that he would be prepared for matches in smaller centres if

the financial prospects were satisfactory. ¥ ¥ ¥ More Bouts J. Carruthers, the Australian professional boxer, will continue to seek bouts. The former bantam-weight boxing champion of the world said this in the dressing room after he had been well beaten in his second comeback fight against the Australian feather-weight champion W. Taylor at the Sydney Stadium on Monday evening. ¥ ¥ ¥ Mr Ive Invited The president of the Amateur Swimming Union of Australia (Mr H. B. Ive) has been invited to visit New Zealand at the time of the national swimming championships next February, primarily to conduct the first national referees’ examination. He will also make observations on the conduct of the championships and bring New Zealand officials up to date on Australian affairs. The New Zealand association Will be meeting the cost of the trip, which will be Mr Ive's second to this country in five months. He attended the annual meeting of the association in Christchurch at Labour week-end. * * * Athletic Remits A move by the Auckland centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to have the decathlon included in the Empire Games, win be made at the annual meeting of the New Zealand association which will begin in Wellington today. There is no decathlon event in the Empire Games at Perth next year. The Waikato centre will ask for national championship events for juniors, under 17. tp be held .in conjunction With - the present junior championship and that the two-mile event for juniors in the championship programme be replaced by a three-mile race. A similar notice of motion will be presented by the West Coast. North Island, centre to increase the 5000 metres junior walk to 10,000 metres. A recommendation from the Wellington centre is that the matter of Sunday sport be left to the individual centres.
