NEW N.A.T.O. COMMAND
German Naval Appointee (N .Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Nov. 23. Britain had agreed to a plan under which a German naval officer would head a new N.A.T.O. sea command covering waters right up to the Russian Baltic port of Leningrad, the “Daily Express” reported from Washington. The news cast new light on Mr Khrushchev’s demand that neutral Finland should join in mutual defence against a revival of German militarism, the report said. The agreement, reached in Oslo, would now have to be ratified by the N.A.T.O. Ministerial conference in Paris next month, the report said. The new Baltic Approaches Command would be a part _f the N.A.T.O. northern tier, which was commanded by a Danish officer. He still zould have final authority over the naval unit. But the ships patrolling in the Baltic would be under the command of a German officer, with senior subordinates also likely to be Germans, the report said.
