OFF THE WIND.—The R Class racing dinghy above is G. Cooke’s Fantastic—aptly named, for the boat has no stern. Buoyancy is provided in the hull with a false deck. The object of the “hole in the back** is to allow water to escape quickly and to provide room for spinnaker booms. Another refinement is a double fin on the rudder below water level. The fin acts in a similar fashion to an aircraft’s wing boundary layer, reducing the drag caused by turbulence, specially when rounding a mark. Fantastic is expected to be one of the leading boats in the Canterbury R Class championship race due to start from the Waimakariri Sailing Club at noon today.
