Veterinary School Ready By 1964
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON. Nov. 17. If everything goes according to plan, second-year veterinary teaching will begin at Massey Agricultural College in 1964, the principal (Dr. A. Stewart) said today. The establishment of the chair of veterinary science at Massey had received final approval from the Minister, and the post was now being advertised. Dr. Stewart said. “Applicants are being sought throughout the Eng-lish-speaking world”, he said. “Going with the chair is the deanship of the faculty of veterinary science, and the man apopinted will be expected to begin work next year planning both buildings and curriculum. “If the successful applicant is from overseas, he will probably have to spend some time studying New Zealand conditions. “If he comes from New Zealsind, it is probable he will have to spend some time looking at overseas institutions before bringing down final drafts for the school.
"It is expected the preliminary sketches and final working drawings, as well as curriculum planning, and then the erection of buildings, will take till the beginning of 1964,” said Dr. Stewart.
First-year teaching is already done in New Zealand.
The students then usually proceed to Australia to do the balance of the course. An agreement with Sydney University to accept a certain number of New Zealand students is due to expire in 1963, but the Veterinary Services Council is negotiating with the university to accept students till 1964 when the New Zealand faculty is expected to be ready. One of the conditions laid down for the establishment of the school at Massey is that full science teaching will be available and negotiations are continuing between Massey and Victoria University to ensure that this requirement will be fulfilled.
