ADVERTISING MEDICINES
“Some Mislead Public”
(NJ!. Preu Association) WELLINGTON. Nov. 14. An officer of the Health Department would attend the next annual conference of the advertising agencies to point out misleading claims in some medical advertisements, the Minister of Health (Mr Shelton) told the House of Representatives today. He was replying to Mr N. E Kirk (Opposition, Lyttelton) who, during the discussion on the estimates for the Health Department, said that consumers were being deceived, misled, and misinformed by medical advertisements, such as those for "fancy” toothpastes which did everything but clean teeth. Mr Kirk suggested there should be a campaign in the schools and by the Consumer Service and Housewives’ Association. Mr Shelton said the success of the advertisements depended on the credulity of the individual. “We are most concerned about some advertising that is going on and have pointed out errors to the advertising agencies,” he said.
