ESCAPE TO WEST
Armoured Car Used (N.Z.P.A.-rt*«rt«r—Copvrtphr) BERLIN, Nov. 15. Five East Germans drove a home-made armoured car through a hail of bullets tired by East Berlin police to reach West Berlin unhurt -v. a „ strong steel plates reinforced with layers of concrete which Hie refugees—two men and three women—-bad fixed to the back and sides of their station waggon. A . steel plate guarded the whole windscreen with a narrow opening for the driver to see through. Four Communist border guards, using three submachine guns and a pistol, flred more than 100 bullets at the vehicle. The ear’s windows were smashed, a- front tyre burst, and one shot hit the engine. The five East Germans, a young' couple, the woman’s mother and an engaged couple, drove through a zig-zag obstacle on the East German side which forces cars to slow almost to walking pace.
