Hackthorne Road
Sir, —Having recently come to reside in Christchurch I have been greatly impressed by the beauty of the city, especially as seen from our home in Cashmere Hills. The attractive houses set among spacious gardens surrounded by beautiful trees, the fine public and private gardens and well-tended playing fields help one to realise the people of the city feel a sense of pride in their surroundings. But what of some of the streets? I know New Zealand very well and wonder if in any city there is to be seen a more deplorable street than Hackthorne road, especially the lower portion. To venture up or down is a positive danger to life. There are holes in the pavement 10 inches deep. It would be interesting to know who, or what public body is responsible for such neglect. —Yours, etc., FOOTSORE. November 9. 1961. [The engineer of the Heathcote County Council (Mr I. L. Hall) suggests that this correspondent communicate with the county office.]
