“EXPLOSION” IN PLANE
Noise Probably A Back-Fire (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 1«. The “mystery explosion” on a Singapore - bound R.N.Z.AJ’. DC6 last week is a mystery no longer. The “bang” which caused the troop-carrier's captain to delay at Darwin is believed to have been a back-fire in one engine after the engine's air-fuel ratio increased for no apparent reason. The pilot, concerned with the safety of his 50-plus Army passengers and fellow crew members, was observing normal precautions, according to an Air Force spokesman at Whenuapai today. He discounted the suggestion of "an explosion” a'ooard the aircraft, as reported earlier. After a complete inspection of the plane at Darwin, in which a T.E.A.L. engineer. Mr J. Harding, participated after being flown from New Zealand, the aircraft continued on to Singapore without incident. The plane returned to Whenuapai today with a load of 2nd Battalion personnel. The DC6 left again for Singapore at 6 p.m.
