Whirlwind Seen Near Wakatipu
(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Nov. 16. A gigantic whirlwind which snatched up debris and tree branches to a height of several hundred feet, was seen by an Invercargill garage proprietor, Mr Jack Bell, and his wife as they were returning to Invercargill from Queenstown in last night's gale. They just missed it. The drive was spectacular. Lake Wakatipu looked like a storm-tossed Foveaux 'fiHrait and buildings were damaged all along the road. At Nokomai, what appeared to be miniature nuclear explosions were visible all along the high ridges. These were actually great dust clouds. •
