INDUSTRIES AT KAIAPOI

“Unthinking” Criticism Criticism of the siting ef new industries planned for the borough of Kaiapoi, recently published In Christchurch newspapers, showed a lack of appreciation of the important part that Kaiapoi played in New Zealand industry, says a statement from the Kaiapoi Businessmen’s Association. The statement says that the following facts have not been carefully considered: “The managers of industry are the most qualified to decide where new factories will be best situated. It must always be the prerogative of industry to select a suitable factory site in an area able to provide the labour, the transport facilities, and the market outlet for their products. “The disposal of sewage and effluent by means of rivers and sea has been regarded as common practice by all large cities, boroughs, towns and factories in all parts of New Zealand for more than 100 years; The disposal of all waste comes under the Health Department regulations. Common sense will ensure the public that industry and the health authorities will give the same careful attention today —as in the past—to the disposal of effluent from new factories.

“Rather than express unthinking criticism, it should be a source of congratulations that new industries have been attracted to Canterbury to aid the future development of our province, says the statement.
