TOWNSWOMEN’S ANNUAL FAIR
Amongt the “tension and beastliness" everywhere apparent in the world today, such displays of flowers and produce as yesterday held by the Christchurch Central Townswomen’s Guild were a happy reminder of the things in which people could take comfort from day to day, said the Mayoress (Mrs G. Manning) when she opened the guild’s annual. fair and flower show at the Latimer Hall yesterday afternoon. Praising the considerable part townswoman’s guilds played in the cultural life of the city, Mrs Manning said riie believed the yearly success of these displays was itself sufficient evidence of the tremendous co-operation and team-work among members. Mrs Manning was introduced by the guild president (Mrs C. Crawford). Others welcomed included the Dominion secretary (Mrs R. H. Smith).
The fair, consisting of several hundred entries in the usual flower and produce classes, also attracted several hundred women shoppers. Throughout the afternoon, cakes, kettle-holders, coconut ice, jams and jellies changed hands while the organising committee looked on approvingly at the growing addition to guild funds. A large collection of roses, rich-coloured and in full
bloom displayed by the Canterbury Rose Society, was also inspected by those present. Items were given by Mesdarnes E. Aitken and N. Emms (piano duets) and Mrs M. Dawson (musical monologue). Award winners in the competitions sections were: Arts and crafts, Mrs N. Goode; sweets, Mirs M. Murrell; jams, Mrs M. Murrell; cakes, Mrs M. Murrell; floral. Mrs' L. Kingston. Over-all points in whole competition, Mrs M. Murrell. The four judges were Mesdames A. Cooper (sweets). S. Elcock (floral), R. Cornell (arts and crafts), and G. Smith (jams and pickles).
