TWELVE FIRES YESTERDAY

Twelve fires were attended by units from the central station and sub-stations in Christchurch, yesterday. Though most of the blazes
were scrub and grass fires which did little damage, a house at Tai Tapu was burnt out and a tyre changing bay and car on the premises of the Midland Engineering Company in Montreal street were gutted. A bicycle shed was extensively damaged in the same fire and slight damage was done to the roof of a butchery in Manchester street, opposite “the Municipal Electricity Department when the damped fire in the smoke house got out of control.
A short circuit was believed to have caused a fire in a car belonging to Mr R. R. Lambourne, on the side of Harewood road near Kingsley road about 2.30 p.m. The fire damaged wiring, upholstery and paint. It was attended by one engine from the St. Albans station. The first call yesterday was about 10 a.m., to a grass and scrub fire on the premises of Millers Drapery, Ltd., at 66 Pages road. The fire was attended by one unit from the Woolston brigade, and did no damage. Another scrub fire in Orchard road, near the Christchurch airport, occurred. soon after 3 p.m., and was attended by an engine from the St. Albany station, a tender from Paparua, and a pump from the airport. About an hour later an engine from Woolston was called to another grass and scrub fire at 332 Marine parade, New Brighton, on the property of Mr C. Bryant. No damage was done. Another two scrub fires occurred between 5 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. One on Canterbury Education Board property in Kargest crescent, Waltham, was dealt with by one engine from Woolston, and another in a shingle pit in McTeigue road, Hornby, was attended to by one engine from Sockburn; House Gutted Fire gutted a house at Tai Tapu yesterday on the “Ahuri Station” farm property on the main road to Akaroa. A hedge separated the burning house from another nearby and brigadesmen, who answered the call about 4 p.m., fought to stop the blaze spreading. x One unit from the Sydenham brigade was called, with a tender from the SpringsEllesmere station. A spraying tender on the property was also used. The burnt house, owned by Mr D. P. Graham, was occupied by Mr A. L. Manson.
