The whare is three miles from the homestead of Mosnui Station, 17 miles from Matawai. One of the station owners, Mr J. Hope, who was out deerstalking, banged open the whare door and found the two men asleep in the bunks. Mr Hope, who was armed with a .303 rifle, grabbed a .270 Cheetah rifle standing near the door, and hurled it down the hill. The two men after denying their identity, agreed to go independently to the homestead . Mr Hope retrieved the rifle he had thrown away, and later telephoned the police.
He and his brother searched on horseback for the two men, but without success. Six police left for the station, but by the time they arrived the men had vanished. The search was continued until nightfall. The search started early this morning after the discovery on Tuesday night of a 1956 model car, which had been missing from Opotiki for three weeks. The car had been abandoned nine miles from the main road at Matawai.
