No Building For Accelerator (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 15. Because there was no building to put it in, a costly Van de Graaf accelerator, recently arrived in New Zealand, would have to remain in packing cases for the next two or three years, said the director of the Institute of Nuclear Sciences (Mr T. A. Rafter) today. "This is a serious setback to the nuclear physics programme of the institute," he said.
The machine was used to accelerate protons, which were then used to study the nuclear structure of elements.
“Due to the extremely slow progress made with the development of the institute site at Gracefield, thik machine, costing £84.000. wilt have to remain in packing cases for two or three years until buildings for it are erected,” said Mr Rafter.
