TROTTING Mastertoil Trotting Cup To Namu Lady

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON. Nov. 12. Nairn Lady, owned and trained by Mr H. J. Massey, of Opunake, won the Masterton Trotting Cup in a close finish with No Comment at the Masterton Trotting Club’s annual meeting at Hutt Park Raceway on Saturday night. Last year Nose Dive, an elder half-sister to Namu Lady. also owned and trained by Mr Massey, finished second to Dark Signal in the cup. A four-year-old by the New Zealand Derby winner Sir Michael from Silver Earl, Namu Lady has now had two wins in three starts this season. On Saturday she was cleverly handled by G. Grantham, who worked her out from an awkward inside place to take and hold the lead just before the line. No Comment, a half-neck back, was possibly doing the better at the line, but his run was delayed a traction too long, and he was carried wide on the turn. Vanese, which rated behind the pacemaker Chelsea Lady most of the way. weakened slightly to third, just ahead of Bobcat, which had every chance, and Spangled Princess, which was not well placed at any part. FINE BUN The double with Namu Lady was completed when Mossman came with a fine run to beat the favourite Silent Hall, which had tried to lead all the way in the Stewards’ Handicap. The pace was a strong one and Silent Hall had all but the winner struggling from the three furlongs. R. A. Pointer was a moderate third, clear of Foretell and Valiant Sandy. Canterbury stables won five races, the other three winners coming from Opunake, Trentham and Pukekohe. After wind and rain earlier in the day, the weather cleared and after the first race the wind dropped, the night being fine and cool. The track was fast. There was an attendance of 4513. Chelsea Lady was in front soon after the start of the Masterton Cup and set a fast pace through the straight the first time from Vanese. Namu Lady. Bobcat. Spangled Princess. No Comment. True Gold (wide). Young Goughs, Dither. Legis. Queen Audrey. Silvester and Lynwood Earl, Brigadoro having been pulled up. With a round to go ChelLady led True Gold (outer) and Vanese (rails). Lagis was improving on the outer. ahead of Young Goughs, Silvester and Dither. At the three furlongs Chelsea Lady led True Gold and Vanese. with Bobcat. No Comment. Legis Silvester (outer) almost abreast and Namu Lady next on the inner. Vanese looked likely halfway down the straight, but J Namu Lady burst clear and held off a strong finish by No Comment to beat him by half a neck. There was a length and a quarter to Vanese. then Bobcat. Spangled Princess. Silvester, True Gold, Chelsea Lady. Young Goughs and Dither. STRONG FINISH Mossman, patiently driven at the rear of the bunch, finished strongly to beat the pacemaker Silent Hall going away in the Stewards’ Handicap. Silent Hall went at a fast clip in front from the start, and only succumbed in the last 20 yards. Ra Pointer, in the trail almost all the way. was taken out to challenge in the straight, but was only a moderate third, clear of i Foretell, which lost his pace (on the inner in the middle i stages, but which got clear half a mile from home. Valii ant Sandy, which looked to be going well in fifth place at the three furlongs and I then lost ground, came again ; for fifth, followed by Lucky Guard, which dropped out in j the last two furlongs. Silver Image, which was never likely, Tongariro and Maud Noble. Van Potts, after breaking at the start, was pulled up.
