WHITE ELEPHANT STALL
Elizabeth House Function
A white elephant stall, held last evening at Elizabeth House to raise money for the house building fund, was described by its organisers afterwards as “most enjoyable and successful.”
Members of the four groups which administer the house (the Christchurch branches of the English Speaking Union, the Victoria League, the Royal Commonwealth Society and the Navy League) took part in animated bidding encouraged by a city auctioneer, Mr N. McCrostie.
Packages of left-over meat, cycles, antique vases and portraits sold at high prices before about 50 persons.
Before the sale members were entertained to cocktails and a buffet dinner in the reception rooms. On behalf of the house committee and the board of governors, the chairman (Mr W. S. MacGibbon) welcomed guests.
