TAKAPUNA TORNADO

Damage To Houses (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 29. In a few terrifying moments on Saturday morning a fierce tornado struck at properties in Northboro road, Takapuna, causing damage and endangering lives. In a new house under construction three glass doors were blown out and a large section of the iron roof ripped off and scattered. Other houses were shaken, tiles lifted, spouting smashed, garden structures broken and the wall of a glasshouse blown in.

The hot water pipe on a roof was bent Fruit trees and shrubs suffered. The tornado was confined to a small area not more than about 400 yards long and about 100 yards wide aqd seemed to die out as suddenly as it started. The house that lost part of its roof belongs to Mr A. Turner, a builder, of 42A Northboro road. He was away and Mrs Turner was alone with their child in temporary premises a few yards away from the damaged house. Mr T. E. Clark, who lives two doors away from the Turners, said it had been raining and there was a lull. “The wind started with a roar and our house shook,” Mr Clark said.

He went to help neighbours, including Mrs Turner and another woman who had been at home by herself.
