The Minister of Works (Mr Goosman), opening the annual Motueka Show at Marchwood Park today, said he was once “a mediocre handler of an axe” himself in bis youth. Mr Goosman had referred to the fine quality of axemanship displayed at the show, where five New Zealand and two South Island championships were at stake. Mr Goosman, however, was not content to talk about axemanship. He went across to the axemen’s ring, stripped off, and demonstrated a standing chop, showing he was still no mean hand with an axe. The member of Parliament for Buller, Mr C. F. Skinner, also tried his hand, but conceded ability to Mr Goosman.
