The Canterbury Yacht and Motor-boat Club held its amt full day of clan racing an Saturday when aeries for the senior classes were begun and trophies for other types were competed tor. More than M boats started on scratch to give officials an idea of performances on which to assess handicaps. The racing promised to be good, but towards the end of the race the fresh easterly wind dropped and some yachts were becalmed. The fleet was led comfortably by J. Morrison's Van Tromp, the only representative of its class in Christchurch which will be eligible for the World championships next year and the Olympic Games in 1954. Although sailing with only a tiny jib and not using a spinnaker on leads, Morrison opened up on the fleet for most of the way. The only boat which could keep within striking distance was G. S. Mander's R class dinghy Frenzy, which gained on the wind and made a fast run towards Church Bay in the triangular section of the course which took the fleet past Quail Island. The R class dinghies Impetu<B. J. C. Wall) and Vision (A. W. Shields and B. Marriott) stayed elose to Frenzy's heels for a start but as the wind dropped Vision lagged behind and came across the line eighth m the fleet and behind two Finns. W. Cordell's catamaran Bikini finished ninth after starting 2.5 min late: the extra time would have allowed him fifth place behind Van Tromp, Frenzy, Impetuous and Fresco (B E. Treleaven and M. Seiwood). C. Papps and B. McKnight, in the R class yacht Freewav, crossed the line at 3:44.1, 17

seconds behind the first Finn sailed by A. Burgess, but were disqualified for a breach One yacht did not start at all. This was the new clinker ply dinghy Contort, which M.
