Lyttelton Man Taken A Lyttelton hotelkeeper (Mr A. Scotti who had been toying with the idea of a few days’ holiday break for some time, had his wish fulfilled last week when he accepted an impromptu invitation from his friend, LieutenantCplonel M. Zinkovich, of the United States Air Force at Harewood, to have a quick look at the ice by Globemaster. Mr Scott said at Lyttelton yesterday, that the invitation was made last Monday, and the next day. soon after 9 p.m. he was Airborne on his first Antarctic journey. The trip south took 10 hours and the return journey 12 hours. The mileage he travelled during his brief vacation which ended with his return to Harewood on Friday was 5800. The whole experience was most enjoyable and both the American and New Zealand hospitality was wonderful, said Mr Scott. But for adverse weather he might have watched air drops over the Pole. He saw three supply drops over Byrd Base. Another feature of his visit was a journey from McMurdo Sound to Scott Base by weasel, and the long daylight was also a novelty to him, he said.
