S 1 S bowlers, bavins thfh first taste of Indian pitches, today toiled all day • young combined Indian Universities team, which scored 235 for five wickets on the first day of a three-day match. The Universities’ batsmen were largely Inexperienced, but they were good enough to hold out against nine bowlers tried by Dexter, and lose only flve wickets. Realising the pitch was completely dead. Dexter gave the faster bowlers few overs. The total reached 216 before the third wicket fell, but the taklnr of three wickets tn the last 25 minutes Improved the M.C.C.'s position. Bert Batsman Mllkha Singh, the left-handed test player, was easily the best batsman, and one of .the few showing a willingness to attack He scored 74, with 12 fours, tn two hours 35 minutes. Gore. Gaekwad and Bhstis sit batted solidly. Gore making M minutes, and Gaekwad 53. with seven fours. Bhatia was 30 not out at stumps. S? r * bad opened the innings with Gaekwad. but after scoring 15. was struck on ths ear by a short ball, and had t< retire. He returned when Gaekwad was dismissed at 113. and entered a profitable partnership with Mllkha Singh, who punished the spinners with forceful driving.
