Obituary MR J. MATTHEWS

Mr James Matthews, oldest member of the Christchurch Model Yachting Club and the mainstay of the club in recent years, died on Friday. He was 76. Mr Matthews joined the club in 1908 after coming to New Zealand from England where he had participated in model sailing. He had been secretary of the Christchurch club for seven years at the time of his death. Before the Second World War he was commodore.

For many years Mr Matthews sailed the well-known 4ft flin scale models of the yachts Alfa and Beta on Victoria Lake in Christchurch. He devoted much of his private time to the interests and activities of the club and paid special attention to children. with whom he would spend hours at a time instructing and assisting in the construction and preparation of !>oats tor racing. Mr Matthews is survived by three sons. Messrs C, W and E. Matthews, and two daughters, Mesdames E. Pugh and B. Thomas.
