U.S. TROOPS IN EUROPE
Big Increases Ordered
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Oct. 12. The Defence Department is reported to be preparing to increase United States troop deployment to Europe well above the 40.000 men ann<2J.nced on September 9. The 40.000-man deployment began with the arrival of 2000 American soldiers at Cherbourg, France, yesterday. The 40.000-man contingent « round troops—--17,000 individual soldiers to bring the Seventh Army in GennW to full strength, 3000 to complete mechanisation of three infantry divisions, and 20.000 in combat support and supply units. The additions will bring American troop strength io Europe to about 275,000 men. The department yesterday ordered another 10.000 air and ground troops in Europe Actual movement of the troopy will start on November 1, Mid Mr Robert McNamara, the Secretary of Defence. WM ,lK * snnounced that 20,000 men are to be called up in November. This is the Mme number as for October. In September 25,000 men were called up. Before the Berlin crisis, the monthly call-up was only 6000.
