GIFTS FROM U.S. JAYCEES
Presentation In Christchurch
Athletic caps and South Carolina Jaycee badges were presented to the Christchurch Junior Chamber at a luncheon yesterday. The gifts, from the Greenville Junior Chamber, express thanks for hospitality given by Christchurch Jaycees to United States Jaycees visiting Christchurch with the United States Air Force. Lieutenant W. J. Corbett, United States Air Force information officer at Harewood, brought the gifts to New Zealand and handed them over yesterday. Lieutenant Corbett told the meeting about the annual South Carolina beauty contest promoted by the Greenville Junior Chamber. He showed slides illustrating the four-day programme of elimination contests. Eighty contestants nominated by South Carolina towns were called on to demonstrate their beauty and intelligence in an exhausting series of interviews and appearances, said Lieutenant Corbett. Greenville, with a population about the same as Christchurch, had a city hall capable of seating 5000, he said. The interest In the contest was so big that every seat for the four evenings was sold in advance and a handsome profit made available for charity. The winner went on to take part in the Miss America contest at Atlantic City, New Jersey. Lieutenant Corbett suggested the Christchurch Junior Chamber might do well to promote a similar contest for Canterbury—-or even the South Island.
