Hillman Super Minx

NEW 1.6 litre saloon, the 1 Hillman Super Minx, has been announced by the Rootes Group. The car has undergone three quarters of a million miles of road testing, most of it in Kenya and Sweden, and has a completely new body design, a top speed of more than 80 m.p.h. anchorages for three types of safety belt, complete undersealing and only three greasing points. It is three inches longer and an inch and a half wider than the Minx, but has a more spacious interior, more engine power and better appointments. Both front and rear screens are of the wrap-around type and give good visibility. The engine is a 1592 c.c. unit producing 66 b.h.p. at 4800 r.p.m. It is available coupled to the close-ratio four-speed gear box or an automatic transmission. The suspension is normal, with coil springs at the front and semi-elliptics at the rear. The luggage boot is deep, wide and unobstructed, and inside the car there are fulllength parcel shelves and a lockable glove box is available as an accessory.

The 11-gallon petrol tank is claimed by the makers to give the car a range of 300 miles, and the spare wheel is carried in a special cradle beneath the rear floor. There are child-proof door catches which can be set to immobilise the interior handles. The main instruments are mounted above the steering column in the driver’s direct line of vision and the hand controls and toggle switches are grouped within easy reach. The standard equipmentincludes screen washers and twin sun-visors. A heaterdemister unit is available as an extra. Also recently announced by Rootes is the Humber 90 De Luxe saloon, Mark 1.
