Newmarket Sprints Fast At Riccarton

Newmarket sprinted seven furlongs brilliantly on the No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday. Hand Over was impressive in a fast mile gallop, and Abou Ben Adhem showed high speed for six furlongs. These horses have engagements at the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting at Orari.

Galloping was done on a track almost bare of grass, and firm after a spell of fine weather. The morning was calm and mild, and horses could have hardly had better conditions for fast gallops. Newmarket (Leach) led Stradbroke (Mein) and Brydone (Cowles) by half a length ending seven furlongs in Imin 26 3-ssec The stablemates sped over the last half-mile in 48 3-ssec. - - Newmarket will start his slx-year-old racing in the Stewards' Handicap at Orari. He won against open sprinters at Blenheim In his final race last season before being put aside for the winter. Hand Over (A. H. Eastwood) gave Kamal (Low) a start of two lengths half-way through their mile gallop, but finished alongside her stablemate. They made fast time all the way, recording Imin 41 sec for the distance and 50 4-ssec for the last half-mile. Hand Over is a fit mare for the Stock Memorial at Orari. Abou Ben Adhem (Kempton) hurried over six furlongs in Imin 14 l-ssec, easily the best of the morning for this distance. He recorded 48sec for his last half-mile, and did the job well. • Abou Ben Adhem is fit for a fresh start in the Stewards' Handicap at Orari. Bodkin (Collins), a lightweight In the October Hack Handicap at Trentham, shaped well in a seven-furlong trial. He finished a length clear of his stablemates. Wellington (T. Bagful (Williams) started with them, but dashed to a long lead going to the half-mile. He slackened to the straight and took SO 4-Ssec for the last halfmile.
