CRICKET New Zealand 249 Against Western Australia

(Ti.2. Press Asm.—Copyright) PERTH, October 12. With good scores of 62 by the captain, J. R. Reid, and 56 by the Canterbury man, M. E. Chapple, the New Zealand cricket team made 249 against Western Australia on the first day of a three-day match today. New Zealand was in a good position at afternoon tea, with 207 for five wickets, but the tail-end batsmen failed to make much of a showing, adding only 40 more runs.

Reid elected to bat on a perfect batting pitch, but New Zealand lost the first wicket at only six, when Dowling was out leg before wicket to the fast bowler, H. Bevan, for two. Dowling played over a fast yorker. The other opener, Sparling, was out for six when he mistimed a drive off Slater, and lofted the ball to mid-on, where Forsaith took the catch. After 70 minutes, rain stopped play with the score at 66 for two wickets, with Barton on 32 and McGregor, 23. Play resumed after about 20 minutes, but in the halfhour left to lunch both Barton and McGregor were dismissed, Barton being run out

for a well-made 34 after hav-1 ing added only four to his score, and McGregor, after some free hitting, being caught by Joysit off the bowling of Punch for 36. A solid partnership between Reid and V. Chapple paved the way for a better score. Reid came to the wicket after Barton had been run out Chapple joined Reid, when McGregor was caught, and was content to hold up his end while Reid played the Reid ’ was particularly severe on the off-spinner, Slater, but it was Slater wffio eventually got him out. Reid mistimed a pull shot, and was well caught at midwicket by Lodge.

Dick joined Chapple, and both batted steadily until tea, when Chapple was 30 not out, and Dick 12 not out. NEW ZEALAND First Innings G. Dowling, lbw, b Bevan J P. Barton, run out .. 34 J.
