FLIGHTS TO ANTARCTIC
Three Planes Today Two Globemasters left Harewood last night and two more are expected to fly south this morning. Tonight another Globemaster will leave Harewood. On board the aircraft tonight will be the commander of the Military Air Transport Services (Lieutenant-General J. W. Kelly), the United States Naval Support Commander (Rear-Admiral D. M. Tyree), Sir Vivian Fuchs, the head of the United States Antarctic Research Programme (Dr. T. O. Jones) and Mr J. Blanford, counsel for the armed services committee in the House of Representatives. Yesterday the weather at the Ross Island base in McMurdo Sound was considered to be favourable for tonight's flight. Admiral Tyree and Sir Vivian Fuchs will meet General Kelly late this afternoon when they both arrive back from Wellington and the Special Committee on Antarctic Research conference which will end today. A United States Navy Dakota flew to Invercargill yesterday morning in readiness for its flight to Antarctica Last night. The aircraft, under the command of Lieutenant J. G. Weeks, was the first Dakota to leave Invercargill for the Ross Island base in two years.
