RUSSIAN A-TESTS
American Secrecy
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON October 11. Secret United States equipment has detected more Soviet nuclear explosions in the atmosphere than the 19 shots already announced by the United States Atomic Energy Commission, the White House said tonight. The White House statement was issued after President Kennedy remarked in a press conference that the Russians “have made over 20 tests in the atmosphere.” Reporters then noted that the commission had so far made public the detection of only 19 shots since the Soviet Union resumed nuclear testing on September 1. To inquiries, the White House press secretary, Mr Pierre Salinger, told reporters that only 19 had been announced until today to safeguard the security of United States detection methods.
