Colombo Plan
Sir,—Would it be possib’s to make the Colombo Plan more effective by requesting the Common Market countries to participate? From its inception the founder* of the Colombo Plan have opened the door tn other countries and now that Britain’s application for membership of the E E.C. is being graciously considered, th* moment may be opportune to issue an invitation. The EEC. countries are already rendering assistance to underdeveloped countries, but various scheme* would undoubtedly benefit by integration with the Colombo Plan,, which has been described by some as a master stroke. A combined CommonweaWhEuropean Colombo Plan might help to smooth relations with the Afro-Asian countries .and within such a scheme Holland, Belgium, and France stand to benefit from British experience and ability to conduct satisfactory relations with former colonies.—Yours, etc., DUTCHMAN. /October 4, 1961.
