“Temporary” Dutch Rule
(N.ZJ’.A. -Reuter—Copyright) THE HAGUE, Oct. 5. The Dutch Prime Minister (Professor Jon de Quay) told the Second Chamber (Lower House) of Parliament yesterday that Dutch sovereignty over Western New Guinea was only “temporary” until the Papuans had a chance to decide their own future. The Prime Minister said Holland was pressing for a rapid decision in the United Nations for the dispatch of a United Nations commission to the territory, which could possibly report to the next General Assembly in order to speed up Dutch proposals for United Nations supervision of New Guinea. Professor de Quay rejected suggestions by some speakers that Holland should start “an open discussion” with Indonesia on New Guinea.
