GOLF Charles In Lead Six Strokes Ahead

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 6. The Australians, K. D. G. Nagle and P. W. Thomson, improved on their first round 75’s in the Caltex £lOOO tournament at Paraparaumu today. But the New Zealand professional, R. J. Charles, again went round in 71, and is six strokes clear of Nagle and seven clear of Thomson and J. D. Durry.

D. Sutherland, an’ “unknown" 19-year-old from North Otago, is second equal with Nagle on 148.

The final two rounds will be played tomorrow. , Charles played same fine golf but he did not steal all of the thunder. There was. for instance, a first-class 71 from the Aucklander. W. J. Godfrey, who yesterday returned an 85. If his tee shots did not quite measure up to what he achieved in the first round, Charles was very consistent and sometimes brilliant. Charles was at his bast around the greens, particularly over the first nine holes.

The biggest thrill for his large gallery was provided at the 436-yard bogey four third. He began with a very good tee shot, but his ball found a hole right in the middle of the fairway. His eight iron then found a trap and he was left with a shocking down-hill lie. He blasted out—and found the cup 25 yards away. Nagle, in carding a 73, did not have any of Charles’ luck. He teed off in a howling westerly, that dropped and then became almost nonexistent while Charles went methodically about his work in the afternoon.

Nagle’S 73 could so easily have been a 70. He was putting for birdies on the 11th, 12th and 13th, and twice the ball needed to have rolled over only once more to have dropped into the cup.

Thomson, who began in much better conditions, returned a 74. His long game was exceedingly good. But his work around the greens

was poor. Sutherland made only one real error in his one-under par 72, when he took five at the bogey-three second. He sank putts from all over the place. At the eighteenth he had a 20-footer for an eagle three.

Godfrey, out in 35 and home in 36. was another who played quality golf. He had birdies at the sth, 6tb and 18th, and was faultless after dropping a shot at the third. More might have been expected from Durry, who carded a 77. If his short game was indifferent, he is still reasonably placed and the second amateur in the field.

F. T. Gordon also kept himself well in the running as the top amateur when he returned a 76.

J. G. Stern, m second place with Durry after the first round, crashed badly today, and finished with an 84. Scores:
