ACCOUNTING CAREERS

Outline Given Students More than 50 secondary school students were told about accountancy as a career last evening. The students, from 11 Christchurch schools heard a panel of six speakers. The function was arranged by the Canterbury branch of the Society of Accountants. Mr K. R. Jordan, chairman of the branch, said that on November 30 last, the total membership of the society had been 6903. Of these. 1907 were public accountants and 4996 registered accountants. In Canterbury and the Wes* Coast there were 254 public accountants and 649 registered accountants.

Educational qualifications were explained by Professor A. S. Carrington, lecturer in accountancy at the University of Canterbury. Professor Car rington said a student should try to get at least a years full-time study before starting part-time study The. notion that a public accountant sat in a chair, pen in hand, entering figures in cash books and ledgers, was wrong, said Mr B. S. Anderson, a public accountant. Mr Anderson spoke about the variety of subjects with which a public accountant had to become familiar.

These included company law, taxation, trusts, wills, and estates. The accountant’s role in industry was explained by Mr R. Yates, a cost accountant for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company of New Zealand, Ltd.
