Obituary MR D. McLENNAN

One of New Zealand's greatest sprinters. Mr D. McLennan, died in Christchurch on Thursday. He was 55. At a time when professional running in the Dominion was of a very high standard, h e was never beaten during his career by either amateur or professional New Zealand runners on the same mark. He beat the Australian aboriginal L. Cooper, a former Sta.well Gift winner, in a memorable race at Lancaster Park. Mr McLennan bettered even time more than 40 times over the professional distances of 100 yards, 110 yards, and 130 yards. Among ■ his greatest races was his very narrow defeat in the New Zealand professional 100 yards championship at the Dunedin Exhibition in 1925, when he conceded starts up to 15 yards. As a cricketer. Mr McLennan played in the senior grade for Lancaster Park, and more recently he played in the suburban competition for the Commercial Travellers’ Cricket Club, of which he was a life member, Mr McLennan is survived by his wife. MR M. SMITH Mr Magnus Smith, a prominent Lyttelton yachtsman, died this week. Born in the Shetland Islands, he was apprenticed as a shipwright, and once worked at Port Chalmers. In 1920 he moved to Lyttelton where he worked until his retirement five years ago.

The captain of the Canterbury Yacht and Motor Boat Club for several years, Mr Smith was a foundation member.
