ARAPUNI TROUT
“No Authority For Catch” (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 6. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Gotz) said he knew nothing of reported orders by the wildlife division of his department for Mr D. P. L. Twiss, of Cambridge, to catch the reported 401 b trout at Arapuni by any means. “I am sure the Auckland Acclimatisation Society would never countenance this sort of thing,” said the Minister. “I would certainly never allow the knifing, spearing or netting of trout. I hope they do eaten him. It will be interesting to see this great fish. But he will have to be taken by rod. After all, they manage to catch 9001 b gamefish by rod.” Mr Twiss, in a telephone interview, said he had twice been assured by the acclimatisation society’s chief ranger, Mr H. Atkinson, and by the president that they wanted him to get the trout. He had been placed in a difficult situation and would definitely not do anything unless the authority was in writing. The trout was in an impossible position to take by legal means. It was in very fast flowing water where it was impossible to reach by trolling, am. would be almost impossible to net. No tackle less than a snapper line would hold it.
“And that’s illegal, too,” he said. “It is a case of either taking it out by foul means or leaving it there until it dies,” said Mr Twiss.
