It was closely associa.ed with the early days of Australia and New Zealand. One of the most notable ships to come from the yard was the Hinemoa, built in 1876, for the Government of New Zealand. Originally designed as a three-masted topsail schooner, she was of 542 tons, and had a service speed of 12 knots. From 1876 to ’922. he Hinemoa carried successive Governors on tours of inspection. acted as a lighthouse tender, and carried out extern sive marine surveys in '"'w Zealand waters.
From 1922 to 1926, she was laid up, but went back into service for three years when she was sold, and used as a tourist ship. She was again laid up in 1932, and stripped of her gear, and in 1944 was towed out to sea as a target ship. At thend of the target practice she showed no sign of sinking, and was finally sunk by a demolition charge.
