High State Of Readiness (KJ! JP.A.-Rrut«r—Copv right) CANBERRA, Oct. 5. Australia's defence forces were now at a higher state of readiness than at any i other period in peace-time history, said the Minister for Defence. (Mr A. Townley) in the House of Repreaentatives today. All three services were at high pitch of training, their organisation had been improved immeasurably, and they were more mobile and better equipped than ever before, he said. Mr Townley was making a statement to the House during discussions of the estimates for defence expenditure in IIMI-62. "The Government believes that in the present international situation, there can be no relaxation in defence preparedness," Mr Townley “There is continuing, and in some areas, increasing. Communist pressure," he said. “In. South-east Asia, there are many elements of instability which give cause for the gravest concern."
