£l0,000 FIRE ON RUAPEHU
Tearooms Gutted (NX Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 6. Fire which swept through the tearooms at the foot of the second chairlift on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu this morning caused damage estimated at £lO.OOO. The blaze was first noticed about 1 a.m. by members of the Ruapehu Ski Club, staying in a lodge a short distance from the tearooms. By the time they arrived on the scene the tearooms were blazing and little could be done to save the building or the equipment inside. The manager of the Chateau (Mr J. A. Mulder) said tonight that the tearooms bad been the main headquarters of Ruapehu ski instructors. More than 30 pairs of skis, ski boots and other equipment had been left in the building overnight. The tearooms had been renovated and enlarged before the opening of the present ski season and were the centre of activities on toe mountain.
An electrical fault is thought to have caused the fire.
