Television
Sir, —“Import Them” is Well off the beam when he says sets are cheaper across the Tasman, Prices are higher & Australia. Does he know that New Zealand television sets have sales tax of 20 percent. added, including the carton, packing and freight? Does he know that imported sets, if permitted, would be subject to duty, plus the 20 per cent, sales tax? Does he know that lack of overseas funds restricts the quantity of necessary television parts, causing short supply? Does he know that through manufacturing anything in New Zealand, labour is maintained in full employment and overseas funds saved? Does he know that the high wages he receives are consistent in relation to purchases, taking into consideration all aspects of lack of population restricting manufacturing on a-mass scale as with other countries? You cannot have it both ways.—Yours, etc., T.V. October 3, 1961.
