FIRE IN COAL MINE
Flames Sucked Underground (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL. Oct. 3. Flames and smoke were sucked 100 ft into the Wairaki coal mine at Ohai yesterday to start a second fire which chance and good work by the volunteer fire brigade extinguished before it became really serious. A spark from a fire in the tea cabin started a fire near the No. 3 entrance to the mine. Flames from this were drawn through cracks in the concrete building covering an old return ventilation shaft. The flames were drawn 100 ft into the underground workings, where they set alight timber supports. The Ohai Volunteer Fire Brigade answered the alarm at 3 p.m., and in threequarters of an hour had the fire out.
