New Outlets In East For N.Z. Dairy Products

(A’ew Zealand Press

WELLINGTON, October 3. New outlets were opening UP in the East for New Zealand dairy products at remunerative prices, the general manager (marketing* of the Dairy Production and Marketing Board (Mr P 4 B. Marshall) said today. Mr Marshall has just returned from a short visit to Asian markets. He said that besides attending a meeting of directors of the New Zealand milk processing company in Singapore and Hong Kong, he had negotiated with private interests in other areas, "for the participation by the board in other milk recombining projects.” "There is no doubt that a tremendous amount of interest has created in the East by our activities in Hong Kong and Singapore," he said. "The value of milk as a food and as beverage is being increasingly recognised, and we are pursuing in several places opportunities for satisfying this demand. “For what are relatively modest investments in comparison with the losses we are sustaining on the British market, we can obtain outlets for butterfat and milk powder at remunerative prices. “If the board approves

project? which it discussed ! with the technical director (Mr T. P. J. Twomey) the . number of recombining pro- ■ jects will steadily increase.” Mr Marshall said such proI jec.s would make calls on . the resources of the New Zealand dairy industry in the way of providing experii enced management for starting them and In training operatives abroad to take ' over the management. "If the New Zealand Gov- . eminent can co-operate with I us in some other areas, I feel . sure that additional outlets • can be found. • “Such co-operation would mainly be in the field of top level Government-to-Government negotiation as a preliminary to entry by the board into the processing of our raw materials in the areas I have in mind. "As I see it. a lead-in by, our Government in two or' three countries is all that we need to enable the board to follow on in association with local interests in those countries. “An Export Promotion Council soundly conceived and operated somewhat along the lines followed in Australia. could well be of assistance to our Government and 1 to the board in this sort of operation,” Mr Marshall said
