TOUR OF INDIA AND PAKISTAN
Turf Pitches For Test Matches (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, Oct. 3. All eight test matches during the forthcoming English cricket tour of Pakistan and India will be played on turf pitches, the M.C.C. assistant secretary, Mr S. C. Griffith, said yesterday. Mr Griffith said this assurance had been given by the Indian and Pakistan Cricket Associations, the “Daily Telegraph” reported. He was speaking to reporters at an informal luncheon at Lord’s yesterday. India has played test matches on turf for a number of years. But the 1959 Australian team played tests against Pakistan at Dacca and Karachi on matting, the newspaper said.
Pakistan had built a formidable reputation on matting pitches and had lost only one test—against Australia in 1959. Australia, however, was well beaten by Pakistan when the two countries first met at Karachi in 1956. The M.C.C. team is scheduled to leave London on Sunday. Its first match, in Rawalpindi, will start on October 13. The first test is against Pakistan at Lahore on October 21.
